The American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI), whose mission is to set and promote standards for property inspections and to provide the educational programs needed to achieve excellence in the profession and to meet the needs of its members, announced an Education Partnership and Marketing Alliance with the Living In Place Institute™ (LIPI) on August 31, 2017. LIPI conducts the nationwide Certified Living In Place Professional™ (CLIPP) training, helping home inspectors, real estate agents, remodelers, contractors, designers, and medical professionals, along with other experts; take responsibility for making all homes more accessible, comfortable, and safe for everyone, regardless of the occupant’s age or needs.
ASHI is the most respected professional association for home inspectors in North America. Through ASHI’s continued efforts, ASHI’s Standard of Practice—covering all of a home’s major systems—are now part of many pieces of state legislation and are recognized by consumers as the authoritative standard for professional home inspection. ASHI, founded in 1976, has over 8,300 members and 50+ chapters across the United States, and is the most respected trade association for the home inspection profession. ASHI and LIPI recognize (and as the AARP reports) that approximately 90 percent of seniors wish to continue living in their current home as long as possible. Those homeowners may or may not know what modifications are needed to help them meet their goal. ASHI members are the most appropriate professionals to identify potential home modifications for accessibility and safety. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) & LIPI recognize that the current annual US expenditures of over $50B direct medical costs due to falls, with most falls occurring in a home. For the 300,000 individuals who turn 65 years old every month, these falls can be best reduced through better home design and the proper installation of safety products.
